This CMTE will review the past music therapy legislative efforts and the process of developing and passing legislation in Ohio. Points of action in the process of achieving legislation that will benefit the clients and field of music therapy will be highlighted in which music therapists can easily participate and generate support will be shared. Ideas for generating advocacy opportunities in communities will be discussed. Guides and resources for identifying history, research, clinical examples, and language ideal for different types of advocacy interactions. Participants will have the opportunity to practice applying their advocacy skills with each other to prepare for varying advocacy situations and needs.

Edward P. Gallagher, MT-BC, holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy from Cleveland State University and a graduate certificate in nonprofit management through the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He founded Beck Center’s Creative Arts Therapies program in 1994. He Co-Chair of the Ohio Music Therapy Task Force, Past President of the Cleveland Arts Education Consortium, and has served as a panelist for several Ohio Arts Council grant review panels. He is past president of the Great Lakes Region of the American Music Therapy Association (GLR-AMTA) and the Association of Ohio Music Therapists (AOMT). He received the GLR-AMTA 2007 Service Award, the AOMT Past President’s Award in 2012 and has been inducted into the Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame. He has been recognized by the City of Lakewood for bringing the healing power of music to the community. Each summer he serves as Director of Operations for the All-Ohio State Fair Band and Youth Choir, two honors ensembles with a combined membership of 400 high school honors from throughout the state.

Erin Spring, MM, MT-BC obtained her bachelors and masters degrees in music therapy from Ohio University and interned with the Cleveland Clinic Palliative Care Unit and Cleveland Music Settlement. She is a practicing board-certified music therapist and founded Central Ohio Music Therapy, LLC in 2010 serving central and southeast Ohio. Erin served as adjunct professor and currently provides supervision services to the Ohio University Music Therapy Degree Program. Ms. Spring currently serves as the co-chair of the American Music Therapy Association Workgroup on Music and Memory and co-chair of the Ohio Music Therapy Task Force.
