CSWMFT Music therapy license application - now available
A message from the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board:
"The application to apply for the Licensed Professional Music Therapist (LPMT) license is live. Application instructions are available HERE. Please review the instructions before contacting the Board with questions. Please email music@cswb.ohio.gov with any questions.
Some important points to consider before proceeding with your application: 1.You must create an eLicense account HERE. If you already hold a license issued by CSWMFT or another Board, you do not have to create a new eLicense account. You will see the option to apply for a new license on your current eLicense dashboard. 2.The background checks should not be completed before filing the application. The application in eLicense serves as a location where background checks and other information is attached or recorded. 3.You are not required to request a verification from the CBMT. The CBMT has agreed to provide verification information about Ohio music therapists directly to the Board through the initial period when applications are accepted. 4.You are not required to submit a transcript. However, you must upload a copy of your MT-BC certificate. This must be uploaded as a PDF. Photos are not accepted. 5.Board staff will be working diligently to process applications as quickly as possible. Emails and calls to the Board regarding application status will delay processing. You can check receipt of some applications items and check for any notes by logging into eLicense and selecting “Review Status” under Options on your LPMT license application tile. Please note that while the Board is opening applications for both music therapy and art therapy licenses, certain art therapist license applications will be prioritized owing to a “grandparenting” provision in the statute. This will ensure that all qualifying art therapists can be licensed by the end date of the grandparent period. "

Additional Information: Licensure is Required if... 1. If you are a practicing Music Therapist, you will need a license to practice in the state of Ohio. This requirement will take place OCTOBER 4th 2024. 2. If you see clients anywhere in the state of Ohio, you must have your license - even if you live out of the state (i.e. Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia) 3.If you are a supervisor, you will need to be licensed in order to oversee students.
Additional Information: 1. Renewal Cycles - CBMT and CSW are on different renewal cycles. CBMT renews every 5 years, requiring 100 credits (including 3 ethics credits). CSW renews every 2 years, requiring 30 credits (including 3 ethics credits). 2. CSW Credential - The CSW credential for music therapists is Licensed Professional Music Therapist (LPMT). This will be included in your post-nominals and credentials. As previously mentions, this would be organized by education, state credential, then national credential; an example might look like: MA, LPMT, MT-BC. More clarification to come as additional information is provided. 3. CBMT Needed - You will have to maintain a CBMT credential - it serves as the basis for the license, and provides a national credential for all music therapists. 4. Billing - At this time, it is believed that for billing, licensure may grant access to state funding that was previously not available. More information to come. 5. National Provider Identifier Number - For eLicense, make sure to have your National Provider Identifier Number on hand. eLicense will ask for it and other important and demographic information. 6. Rename Your Files - It would be helpful to rename your file submissions to accurately reflect the content of the pdf scan, such as renaming your MT-BC Certification pdf to reflect this and mitigate confusion. An example might look like: 'John Doe MTBC Certificate.'
